Precision Is Maintained, Not Just Manufactured
A high-precision CNC lathe like the Lunan TCK50 leaves our assembly bay with dynamic runout below 0.003mm. Maintaining that micrometer-level accuracy over 5 to 10 years of multi-shift operation depends on disciplined maintenance routines.
Here are the 5 non-negotiable rules our field service engineers mandate for every industrial installation.
Rule 1: Monitor Lubrication Pressure & Oil Quality Daily
A CNC lathe guideway requires a continuous microscopic hydro-dynamic oil wedge (typically ISO VG68 slideway oil).
- Check reservoir levels every morning: Never let the central lubrication tank run dry.
- Verify line pressure: Ensure pressure gauge reads between 1.5 to 2.5 MPa during the intermittent lube cycle.
- Inspect way wipers: Replace brass and polyurethane wipers at the first sign of tearing to prevent abrasive cast iron dust from grinding into the precision ground guideways.
Rule 2: Grease and Inspect Hydraulic Chuck Jaws Every 8 Hours
Hydraulic chuck gripping force degrades rapidly as swarf and dry chips pack into the master jaw serrations.
- Use high-pressure MoS2 molybdenum disulfide grease via the chuck grease nipples at each shift change.
- A neglected chuck can lose up to 50% of its clamping force at 3,500 RPM due to centrifugal force, creating severe safety risks and part slippage.
Rule 3: Regular Ballscrew Backlash & Preload Check
Thermal expansion and axial wear can introduce backlash on the X and Z axes.
- Conduct a dial indicator reversal test once every 3 months.
- Modern CNC controls (FANUC, SIEMENS, GSK) feature electronic pitch error and backlash compensation parameters that restore factory positioning repeatability.
Rule 4: Coolant Concentration and Tramp Oil Filtration
Bacterial growth in coolant causes acidity, which corrodes machine bed castings, peels paint, and damages synthetic seals.
- Maintain refractometer reading between 7% and 9% for standard soluble oils.
- Equip a disc or belt type oil skimmer to skim hydraulic tramp oil from the coolant reservoir weekly.
Rule 5: Annual Spindle Dynamic Balancing & Bearing Runout Check
Using a Renishaw ballbar or vibration analyzer, check spindle vibration velocity across the entire RPM envelope. Vibration velocity should remain below 0.8 mm/s RMS (ISO 10816-3 Class 1 rigid machines).
